STORYLINES by Sto–A New Way to Stay Connected.

We’re excited to share the Q3 edition of STORYLINES, highlighting important updates and continued momentum across the Sto network. As we approach the close of the year, please note our upcoming holiday closures—November 27–28 for Thanksgiving and December 24 – January 2 for Christmas and New Year, with normal operations resuming January 5, 2026. To improve efficiency and better serve our customers, the color matching function currently performed in Rutland will be relocating to our Atlanta facility effective in January, and Bonded operations have officially transitioned to the Atlanta Industrial Parkway facility.

We’re grateful for your continued partnership and collaboration as we head into the final quarter of the year—and look forward to building on our shared success in 2026!

Will Thorp
Colonial Materials | Winston-Salem, NC

For Will Thorp, tinting isn’t just about mixing color, it’s about mastering precision. With more than four years of experience, Will has developed a deep understanding of how technology, technique, and timing work together to achieve consistent results. His attention to detail and commitment to getting each match right have made him a trusted go-to for customers and colleagues alike.

More Than a Tinter

“There’s never a dull moment in tinting.” Over the past four years, Will Thorp has honed the art of precision color matching—combining technical skill, patience, and a sharp eye for detail.

Then vs. Now

Will’s journey into the tinting world started unexpectedly. “I worked in the Paint Department at Lowe’s and really enjoyed learning about all the different products and how best to apply them,” Will recalls. “My manager asked if I knew anyone interested in the job—I raised my hand. The rest is history.”

Tech + Skill = Accuracy

For Will, precision is a daily discipline. Each morning begins with machine checks, colorant calibration, and a carefully planned tinting schedule. But technology alone isn’t enough—adaptability and experience bring true accuracy. “In this industry, you can’t specialize in just one coating,” Will says. “You have to be proficient in all of them.” His method is simple yet effective: apply a dab, let it dry, and test it at arm’s length. “If it blends in so I can’t see it, that’s a good match.”

Across Sto’s network, it’s this balance of technology and craftsmanship that ensures consistent, reliable color—every time.

Trust Earned Over Time

The most rewarding part of the job? Seeing a customer’s reaction. “When they can’t find the dab I made, I know I nailed it,” Will says with a smile.

Advice to the Next Generation

When asked what advice he would give to someone new to tinting, Will doesn’t hesitate: “Be diligent in keeping notes. Ask questions—all the questions. And take time to triple-check yourself. It’s easy to lose track of one small detail that can lead to a big mistake later.”

Continual growth is always the goal. I believe that we must create innovative solutions for the needs of constantly changing markets. It is the role of the designer to provide a new point of view and provide direction for a better way.

Since 1996 I’ve led Sto Studio, where my primary responsibility has been to generate color and design concepts for architectural clients in The Americas and Europe. Collaborating with architects, engineers, field personnel, constructors, developers and owners I’ve most often provided customized, site-specific solutions to create a better-built world.

As the leader of Sto Studio for The Americas I’ve participated in many, diverse facets of Sto’s business, and contributed to the continual growth of the company. The work of designing and communicating the Sto message has become an additional responsibility. Often collaborating on trade show, collateral, electronic media and branding oversight, I’ve been integral in ensuring our marketing efforts are optimal. Developments in products and in new processes point to modularity and mass production, which have attracted a wider audience and galvanized our position as the innovative world leader of architectural coatings, claddings, and restoration systems. Being an integral part of this [r-]evolution has been truly rewarding, and I’ll always be grateful for the opportunity Sto has provided.

I’ve visited 24 countries but need to start traveling more if I’m going to see all 195 countries in the world.

Proven in the Field

Our latest standout project at Willamette View demonstrates how Sto systems deliver real-world performance—combining durability, efficiency, and design flexibility for occupied renovations.

12705 SE River Rd, Portland, OR 97222

Location: Portland, OR
Distributor: Sto Portland
Distributor Rep: Irek Wielgosz
Description: Reclad of an upscale retirement community using EIFS for improved durability and energy efficiency
Construction Type: Renovation
Completed: 2025

Project Overview
Willamette View, an established retirement community in Portland, faced persistent moisture intrusion and failing fiber cement siding. The goal was to modernize the exterior, improve energy performance, and enhance aesthetics—all while minimizing disruption to residents.

The Challenge
As an occupied facility, construction required precise coordination and phased scheduling to avoid disturbing residents. The team also faced constraints from existing landscaping, mature trees, and limited site access.

Sto’s Solution
To address the extensive deterioration, the team implemented a Sto reStore® Level 4 – Remove & Reclad approach, replacing all existing cladding with a new StoTherm® ci system for continuous insulation and long-term protection. Each section of the building was tented during construction, enabling crews to work through challenging weather while preserving landscaping and maintaining site cleanliness. The result is a renewed, high-performing envelope that blends energy efficiency, durability, and design integrity.

The Result
The completed reclad gives the Willamette View community a revitalized, energy-efficient exterior with modern curb appeal and long-term performance. Through close collaboration between the architect, consultant, owner, and installer, the project met its goals seamlessly—proving that even complex, occupied renovations can achieve lasting results with the right system strategy and team coordination.

On the Horizon
