Sto Powerwall® NExT Protects Hilton Head’s
South Shore Commons
South Shore Commons in Hilton Head Island, S.C., is anything but common. The three buildings constructed in Palmetto Dunes Plantation are as durable as they are beautiful. The coastal climate of Hilton Head called for a durable cladding, along with an air and moisture barrier, to keep it watertight and energy efficient.
Project manager Alan Thompson of Fraser Construction knew just who to call for this community. Thompson and his team brought in Sto Corp. and used its Sto Powerwall NExT system for the job. More powerful than conventional stucco, Sto Powerwall NExT employs a systems approach to building with stucco. Sto Powerwall NExT combined with StoGuardTM, the company’s spray-on waterproofing/air barrier, work together as a system to form a superior wall cladding.
“We have had really good luck with this product in this area along the coast,” said Thompson. “Its durability and ability to hold up in the elements are a must for us when building here.”
Sto primer and Sto finish were used as part of the Sto Powerwall NExT system. Sto coatings and elastomeric finishes can bridge hairline cracks to keep moisture out – all of which add up to a more powerful cladding system.
The 14-month construction project was completed in January 2007 and residents were already enjoying the luxurious condominiums before the end of 2006. There are 18 total units, with each unit occupying three living levels over a parking level. Each unit is approximately 2,800 square feet, according to Thompson, with two bedrooms and a study, and two and one-half baths. Another feature is a screened in porch for every unit.
The sub-contractor for the project was Classic Stucco. According to President, James Stewart, it was the second time he and his company had used Sto products and it was a smooth operation. According to Stewart, he sees a lot of stucco products used within the 100 miles radius. Architect for the project was NCG Architects of Atlanta, the same firm that teamed up with Fraser Construction on another Hilton Head condominium community using Sto Powerwall NExT, Main Sail at Shelter Cove.
