Architects Choose Sto Powerwall® NExT to Cover New Headquarters
When it came time to build a new office for Menefee & Winer Architects, Jim Winer and Tony Menefee chose the best products and hired the best sub-contractor they knew to complete the job. Sto Corp.’s Sto Powerwall NExT was chosen to protect and cover the 5,000 square foot building and was installed by Bob Powell of Prowall Contracting. Sto Powerwall NExT is Sto’s hard coat stucco, combined with StoGuard, the company’s waterproofing/air barrier, to create the New Exterior Technology (NExT).
“We had been in a great office for 14 years as a tenant at the King Plow Art Center (in Midtown West area of Atlanta, Ga.), around the corner from the new office,” said Winer. “We decided that now was the time to own a building and have an office that served as an example of our work.”
And the unique building is a wonderful example of their work. The building is an adaptive reuse of a muffler shop, comprised of two distinct volumes – a one-story former 4-bay pre-manufactured garage building, and a two-story office wing. The architects wanted to put their sustainable design ideas on display and into action. The result is an innovative office with studio, reception, conference, office and library spaces that is tracking a LEED-NC Silver rating from the US Green Building council. It will be the first LEED-NC architect’s office in the state of Georgia. An energy efficient waterproofing/air barrier (StoGuard) fits nicely into the sustainability and efficiency of this building.
Having worked with Sto Corp. for several years, Menefee & Winer knew that Sto Powerwall NExT was the right product for their innovative building.
“We like the plasticity of stucco. It is a cost effective material and is easy to have surface continuity, color, and to compose and control the joint pattern with stucco,” said Winer. “We like Sto because it is a hard coat stucco system backed by a good company and a warranty. Sto has a web site that includes the kind of technical support and details that architects and contractors need. They also have terrific technical reps available to answer questions and visit the job site.”
According to Winer, Sto’s factory controlled mix enhances the possibility of the installation being a success. The fiber additive gives the stucco superior strength and the elastomeric coat gives it additional protection against water infiltration and hairline cracking. “We like the entire system being backed by one company with the installation being the responsibility of one sub-contractor,” said Winer.
Menefee & Winer have specified Sto products on numerous projects and have worked with Powell of Prowall for the past three plus years on both commercial and residential projects.
“The distinctive design, with the two volumes and all the scaffolding, was a challenge,” said Powell. “We took our time on the job with a crew of four. We’ve been putting Sto products on for 15 years and exclusively use Sto.”
The complete building took one year from the time they closed on the building. For more information on Menefee and Winer, visit the web site at www.menefeeandwiner.com. For more information on Sto Corp, see www.stocorp.com.

About Sto Powerwall NExT
More powerful than conventional stucco, Sto Powerwall NExT employs a systems approach to building with stucco. Sto Powerwall NExT combined with StoGuardTM, the company’s spray-on waterproofing/air barrier, work together as a system to form a superior wall cladding. Sto EmeraldCoat, a part of the StoGuard product family, is a ready mixed, flexible waterproofing material that was specially formulated for use under Portland cement stucco and other claddings. It is applied directly to the wall sheathing and functions as a vertical, above grade waterproofing/air barrier when combined with Sto Gold Fill and St Guard Mesh.
