The owners of a beautiful 3,400 square foot stucco and stone home, built on a serene lake in Waseca, Minn., don’t have to worry about moisture entering and damaging their home. They planned ahead and had their home protected by a spray-on waterproofing/air barrier.
Faribo Stucco and Plastering was hired the summer of 2006 to build the couple’s home, which is one floor and wheelchair accessible. The house is complete with a three-car garage and sits amid four lake lots. The owners had a look in mind for their home and shared photos of a building in New Mexico that used a combination of stucco and stone. Faribo’s President, Mark Dube, knew just who to call for products. He contacted Rick Braun at Sto Corp. and together they planned the products needed to complete the home. “Sto stands behind its products more than other companies,” said Dube. “Sto products cover better and we’ve never encountered a problem with its products or the company.”
Faribo used several products from Sto. including StoGuard™, a spray-on waterproofing/air barrier, Sto primer and a Sto elastomeric finish. As for the installation, StoMachine Technology’s All Purpose Stucco Pump was used in the final application.
Dube recommended the waterproofing/air barrier as a step up in the system. The owners felt it was a good suggestion. “StoGuard should work very well and protect the house so that no moisture can enter,” said homeowner, George Winegar. “It’s the way to go, especially if you are using stucco.”
According to Braun, StoGuard’s EmeraldCoat was used to shield the house from the footings up to the roof. EmeraldCoat is part of the StoGuard assembly and is a ready mixed, flexible waterproofing material which was specially formulated for use under Portland cement stucco and other claddings. It is applied directly to wall sheathing and functions as a vertical, above grade waterproofing/air barrier when combined with Sto Gold Fill® and Sto Guard® Mesh.
Sto’s coatings and finishes were used to bridge hairline cracks and keep moisture out, enhancing weather resistance and long-term appearance. A walnut color trim was used on this project matched the metal trim, and a custom tan color was used on the house.
