Sto Case Study

Habitat for Humanity House, College Park, GA.

New Cement Board Stucco from Sto Corp. Offers Installation Advantages For Crew on Habitat for Humanity House in College Park, Ga.

Sto Corp., a leader in cladding, coating and restoration systems, has developed a new product to compliment its line of cladding. Similar to the Sto Powerwall Stucco Systems, the new cement board stucco, called StoQuik Silver NExT™ (New Exterior Technology) System, has installation advantages, the benefits of a harder exterior surface, and the popular appearance of stucco.

The new system was recently introduced on a metro Atlanta area Habitat for Humanity house where Sto Corp. was a major sponsor. The four-bedroom, nearly 1,000 square feet house was built for the Baxter family who moved into their new home in College Park, GA, in December 2006.

“This was a good way to test our new cement board stucco, while helping a family in need,” said Wade Tompkins, Technical Training/Field Testing Manager for Sto Corp. “We were able to evaluate how we can to differentiate in the marketplace. We were able to evaluate its possibilities, and it was a great experience. We are very pleased with the results.” Tompkins was one of several Sto Corp. employee volunteers who worked on the house. This is the third Habitat house that Sto Corp. has been a part of in the past two years, and the company believes strongly in stewardship in its community.

The StoQuik Silver NExT™ System comes in 4’ x 8’ boards and saves labor and time as it applies quickly. The cement board is mechanically attached to the framing using screws. It has a ½” cement board that features a hard surface, like stucco, and it doesn’t require wire lathe or casing beads. Installation includes a base coat plus mesh over joints and seams, and an additional layer of mesh over the entire exterior to help flatten the surface. The two layers of mesh over the joints and seams help prevent cracking. A Sto primer was then used plus a finish coat was applied with a pebble texture (Sto Essence Finish – medium sand).

Another time saver is that the cement board stucco does not have to be mixed. The boards come ready to install. In addition, Sto Guard®, the company’s spray-on waterproofing/air barrier, was used to cover the entire house (including the gables and lower portion). The entire job took about a week to install, including the moisture/air barrier, base coat, cement board stucco, and the finish.

“The StoQuik Silver System is a wonderful additional to our cladding choices,” said Lisa Petsko, Product Manager for Sto Corp. “Builders will enjoy using it because it saves steps and labor. With StoQuik Silver builders will enjoy easy installation, less expensive structural requirements, moisture resistance, and less cracking with our elastomeric finishes.”
