Ray Derby of Blazer Development has been building show homes for years. It is his 15th year at the NW Natural Street of Dreams and he wanted to showcase how a home can have the finest quality in design and craftsmanship and be manageable in size and highly functional. This house is designed for baby boomers and built for the most discerning customers in the world - Derby and his wife. “We wanted to build a house that is the right size for empty nesters,” said Derby. “Who wants the high maintenance, cleaning and hassle of a massive home at this time in our lives?”
The four-bedroom, one level home is 3,600 square feet, with a 700 square-foot bonus room over the garage. All homes with the prestigious Marklund Place address have a view of the 11,245 foot elevation Mt. Hood.
According to Derby, the key to this year’s Street of Dream home is elegant simplicity and old world charm. Derby needed to find products that fit into this theme, and that’s when he found Sto Corp. Derby, a respected builder in Portland, has been named Home Builder Association (HBA) Builder of the year, was president of the HBA of Metro Portland, served on the board of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), and was past president of the Oregon Building Industry Association (OBIA). Derby teamed up with Country Home magazine to create this functional, energy-efficient home, just 15 minutes from Portland. The 2007 Street of Dreams took place July 28 – August 26, 2007 for its 32nd consecutive year. Each year the Street of Dreams, founded in 1976 by the HBA of Metropolitan Portland, highlights the latest in home design, interior decorating and home technology. Derby’s house is among six homes that are estimated to attract nearly 100,000 visitors.
