Sto Case Study

Crescent Shores Condominiums, Myrtle Beach, SC.

Unique Stucco System Thrives in Coastal Climate

It was a huge undertaking, building both towers and the parking deck at once, according to Tony Ely, owner of Coastal Plaster Systems in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The project, Crescent Shores Condos, included two 18-story high towers and an eight story parking deck, for a total of 300,000 square feet. With the cooperation of everyone involved, everything went well and the project was completed on schedule.

“We used Sto Powerwall® Stucco Systems on the entire job and received great support from Sto,” said Ely. “We have worked with them before and we know they make a good stucco system.”

The coastal climate of Myrtle Beach was key in deciding which product to use. “Coastal areas are a tough environment for any cladding and Sto’s stucco system is a durable product and was pleasing to the owners,” said Ely.

The Sto Powerwall® Stucco System is a hardcoat stucco with technologically advanced elastomeric finishes. The finish is a key component to the system, as it allows the stucco to remain water repellent, keep the color longer and stay elastomeric (flexible).

The finish on this project used a special texture, which is Ely’s trademark. “I really liked the finish,” said Dargan Construction’s Bill Cline, the senior project manager on the job. “They used a base coat, primer, finish coat, then the texture was ‘dabbed’ on,” said Cline. “They did an excellent job on the finish. I like the product, and the subcontractor (Coastal Plaster Systems) did a great job and was very conscientious.”

It was Cline’s first time using the Sto Powerwall® Stucco System. “There was a learning curve in the beginning. It needed to be installed per the manufacturer’s recommendations and the building code. Sto understood what needed to be done and made follow up inspections at the job site,” said Cline. “I feel good about Sto and I like the product and the application.”

According to Clint Burdett of Jenkins, Hancock & Sides in Columbia, S.C., who specified the project, he had confidence in Sto as he had worked with the product several times before. “I was very familiar with the product, it met the building codes, and we received a lot of help from Sto’s staff with technical support,” said Burdett. “Sto representatives produced an outline review of the drawings and came to the site to review the product being installed. A product is only as good as the manufacturer and Sto stands behind its product!”

Randy Sides, also of Jenkins, Hancock & Sides, concurs. “The project looks good, the stucco went on well, and we were pleased with the way Sto worked with all of us,” said Sides. “We’ll work with Sto again as they were very cooperative and provided a good warranty.”

The towers, with a total 216 units, took more than a year to complete and all of the units sold quickly. Crescent Shores Condos are right on the beach and are in popular demand! The condos have two, three and four bedrooms. There is a pool amenity complex with a large pool, lazy river (inner tubing area), and an indoor pool and hot tub that are attached to one of the two towers.
